Living here in the desert, we sometimes forget that there are other beautiful parts of the country. One such part is New England, especially in the fall.
Palm Springs Guides staffer Ken Dow's father lives in Rhode Island. Ken’s dad submitted this picture to remind us desert dwellers of what they call Back East, “the changing of the seasons.“

As the weather turns, many more hikers are hitting the trail. As one who hikes many of these trails in the dead heat of summer as well as the prime conditions we are approaching, I have to report my distaste for the trail etiquette displayed by many return enthusiasts. Conditions on the trail show evidence of both the careless pet owner as well as the inconsiderate hiker. Through fields of feces and litter, these magnificent trails are looking more utilitarian than preserved. There are many organizations doing their part to keep the trails maintained and clean, but even the maintenance has in part become obtrusive. Here, I will outline four different problems. Each one is a basic principle that can easily be applied by anyone. This I will call the Dummies Guide for Hiking the Coachella Valley.

Behind the Palm Springs Art Museum lay a gateway. Its starting point is to the left of the O’Donnell Golf Club's entrance. Hidden by a shrub and a couple of trees is the Museum Trail. This is a steep incline leading to the intersection of the Skyline and Lykken Trails. The Lykken Trail traverses the mountain from north to south Palm Springs. This hike takes you through much desert growth, so that means burrs and other uncomfortable dry, scratchy things. The Skyline Trail is noted as one of the most extreme hikes in North America and leads in its entirety a brave and well-trained hiker to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

Recently I led an early morning hike to Eagle Canyon near Palm Springs, California. Getting there can be challenging, but the real fun is getting out. We began our adventure at 5 a.m. The trailhead, located east of the Vons Shopping Center on Hwy. 111, was our starting point. As usual, we did our typical equipment check. Plenty of water, some light snacks and sunscreen were on the top of the list. I recommend carrying a camelback. This pack makes hydration easy as you sip water from a tube connected to the camelback’s bladder that sets on your spine. Here’s a tip for the novice hiker: add ice to your bladder. This will keep your water cold and may even create a cool spot on your back.

Set against the majestic San Jacinto Mountain just west of Palm Canyon Drive is the Palm Springs Art Museum. It is the only accredited art museum in the Inland Empire region. The museum was established as a natural desert museum and started integrating art after the construction of its present-day site in the late 1970s. The addition of its fourth floor in 1995 brought the building to a total of 150,000 square feet. Five years ago, the museum became dedicated to international modern and contemporary art.

Story by Palm Springs Guides Trail Guide Jace Edwards Photographs by Darren Cole For more Darren Cole photos of the trail hike, click here. With many trails in and around the Coachella Valley it is hard to pick which one to take next. My photographer and I decided that we would attempt to climb one of the most challenging hikes the Indian Canyons has to offer — Murray Hill. This hill is noted as being an extremely strenuous hike that tests endurance levels. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) describes these trail as, “remote and challenging” and advises hikers to pack as if they may have to stay overnight. The hill (which feels more like a peak upon completion) overlooks both the Indian Canyons to the east and the various Desert Cities to the north, west and south.
